What Does It Mean When a Butterfly Visits You?
Short answer: A butterfly is one of the oldest symbols of transformation and the soul. When one appears at a meaningful moment, or lands on you, many people read it as a sign that a loved one is near or that they are moving through a change that will turn out well.
Why butterflies stand for the soul
A caterpillar wraps itself up, comes apart completely, and emerges as something with wings. It is hard to find a better picture of change, loss and new life. In ancient Greek, the word psyche meant both soul and butterfly. People have been making this connection for a very long time.
What a butterfly may be saying to you
- You are in a season of change. The messy middle is part of the process.
- Someone you love is close. Butterflies often appear at funerals, gravesides and on anniversaries.
- Lightness is allowed. Joy can sit right next to grief.
When a butterfly lands on you
Here is the practical side. Butterflies sometimes land on people to sip salt and moisture from the skin. That is real, and it does not cancel the meaning. If a butterfly settled on your hand at your mother's graveside, the timing is what spoke to you. You get to hold both.
