What Is Intuition and How Do I Recognize It?

What is intuition, and how do you recognize it when it speaks? If you have ever had a feeling you could not explain, a quiet knowing that turned out to be right, or a nudge you ignored and later wished you had not, this is for you.

Most of us were taught to override our inner knowing. Prioritize logic. Seek answers out there. Trust the experts, the data, the plan. And yet the feeling persists, because intuition is not something outside of you. It is within you, and it has been trying to get your attention your whole life.

I have spent more than thirty years working at the intersection of healthcare and intuitive awareness, first as an EMT, then as a medical massage therapist and medical intuitive, and as a research participant in the 2020 Rhine Duke University psychic ability research project. What I have learned from both sides of that bridge is this: intuition is real, it is recognizable, and it follows patterns. Once you know the patterns, you can find the signal inside the noise.

What Is Intuition, Really?

Intuition is your deeper awareness reading the whole picture faster than your thinking mind can. Part of it is pattern recognition. Your system takes in far more information than your conscious mind can process, and sometimes it delivers a conclusion before logic catches up. Part of it is something subtler, the quiet communication between your body, your awareness, and something larger than both.

Science and spirit do not have to argue about this one. Both agree on the important part: the knowing arrives first, and the explanation comes later, if it comes at all.

How Do You Recognize It? Four Signals

1. Intuition is quiet and quick. It arrives whole, like a headline. It does not build a case. If a voice in your head is arguing, negotiating, or listing reasons, that is thinking, not intuition.

2. Intuition is calm. This is the biggest tell. Fear is loud, urgent, and repetitive. It loops in your chest and speeds up your breathing. Intuition is steady and neutral, even when it delivers difficult news. Learning to tell the difference between a fear loop in your chest and a soul hit in your gut may be the single most valuable skill in this work.

3. Intuition lives in the body. A settled feeling in your gut. A sense of expansion when something is right, or contraction when something is off. Your body registers the answer before your mind finds words for it. Your body may be trying to tell you something.

4. Intuition repeats gently. It does not shout. It returns. The same quiet nudge about the same person, choice, or direction, again and again, without drama. If it keeps coming back calm, pay attention.

Try This Today

Start small. Intuition strengthens the way a muscle does, through low stakes practice. Before you check your phone for the answer, pause and ask yourself: which route feels lighter, which choice feels expansive, what does my gut say first? Then notice what happens. You are not looking for perfection. You are building a track record of trust with yourself.

One more thing: a scattered, stressed body cannot hear its own signals. Grounding comes first. When your energy is settled in your body, intuition stops being a faint whisper in a loud room and becomes a clear voice in a quiet one.

That is exactly why I created my free Grounding By Moon Sign guide. It shows you the grounding practices that fit your emotional nature, so your inner signal has a quiet place to land.
